How Long Does It Take to Import Steel Towers from China? Lead Time Timeline Explained

"How long is the lead time?" — this is the most frequently asked question in tower inquiries. When planning projects, many customers care most about time, not price: When can I get the goods? Will it affect my project schedule? This article breaks down every stage from order to delivery, providing a clear timeline.

Phase 1: Design & Drawings (3-5 days)

After receiving the advance payment, the engineering department produces fabrication drawings based on customer requirements. Standard tower types (e.g., 15-50m self-supporting communication towers) have an established drawing library, so drawings can be produced in 1-2 days. Custom tower types (special heights, multi-platform, irregular structures) require 3-5 days. Drawings must be signed off by the customer before production begins, so the customer's confirmation speed directly impacts the lead time.

Speed tip: Provide detailed technical requirements (tower height, antenna load, platform tiers, wind rating, soil conditions) to reduce back-and-forth communication.

Phase 2: Procurement & Material Preparation (2-4 days)

After drawings are confirmed, the procurement department purchases steel, bolts, galvanizing materials, etc. per the BOM list. Common specifications (Q235B angle steel, flanges, bolts) are in stock and can be released in 1-2 days; non-standard specifications require dispatch from the steel mill, taking about 3-4 days. Large orders (50+ towers) may require 5-7 days for material preparation.

Phase 3: Production & Manufacturing (10-18 days)

This is the largest chunk of the lead time. Three production lines run simultaneously, with a daily capacity of about 15-20 standard towers. Specific cycle times:

• Up to 10 standard towers: 10-12 days
• 10-30 standard towers: 12-15 days
• 30-50 standard towers: 15-18 days
• Custom tower types or 50+: 20-25 days

During production, we send progress photos twice a week so customers can track workshop status at any time.

Phase 4: QC + Galvanizing + Trial Assembly (3-5 days)

After welding, the following steps proceed sequentially: weld appearance inspection (0.5 day) → ultrasonic testing (1 day) → hot-dip galvanizing (1 day) → zinc layer thickness measurement + dimension verification (0.5 day) → trial assembly (1-2 days). Quality inspection reports are provided with the shipment.

Phase 5: Packaging + Shipping Preparation (1-2 days)

Fumigation-free wooden crate packaging or steel frame bundling, labeling, packing list preparation, and booking. Under CIF terms, we handle booking and customs declaration; under FOB terms, the customer designates the freight forwarder.
