Whether a steel tower stands stable depends half on tower quality and half on foundation quality. The same 30-meter communication tower may require completely different foundation solutions on rock versus soft soil. Soil Type 1: Soft Soil / Clay

Soft soil foundations have low bearing capacity (80-150kPa), high compressibility, and are prone to differential settlement. If a shallow foundation is used directly, the tower may begin to tilt after 1-2 years of use.

  • Pile diameter: 0.8-1.2m, depth 8-15m (calculated based on soil layer bearing capacity)

  • Drilling: Drill 4 holes in rock (matching tower base positions), 100-150mm diameter, 1.5-3m deep
  • Anchor bolts: Insert threaded steel anchor bolts and inject high-strength grout
  • Pile cap: Cast thin cap (0.3-0.5m thick) connecting anchor bolts and tower base flange
  • Advantages: Low cost, fast construction (2-3 days), no heavy machinery needed
  • Disadvantages: Must confirm rock integrity; fractured rock requires reinforcement

Soil Type 3: Sand / Gobi Desert

Sand soil foundations have medium bearing capacity (150-250kPa), but sand can be lost through wind and water erosion, requiring special attention to long-term stability.

Recommended Solution: Spread Footing + Anti-Erosion Design

  • Excavation: Dig 2m×2m×1.5m pit
  • Bedding: Lay crushed stone bedding (0.3m thick) at bottom, compact
  • Foundation: Cast reinforced concrete spread footing with base area 2-3x the tower base area
  • Anti-erosion: Lay concrete protective panels or crushed stone revetment around foundation
  • Advantages: Simple construction, good adaptability
  • Disadvantages: Must manage surface drainage to prevent soil loss around foundation
